A Dog’s Purpose? (from a 6-year-old)

18 Mar

from my good friend Scott Fornaciari

Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a ten-year-old Irish Wolfhound named Belker. The dog’s owners, Ron, his wife Lisa , and their little boy Shane, were all very attached to Belker, and they were hoping for a miracle.    I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer. I told the family we couldn’t do anything for Belker, and offered to perform the euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home.

As we made arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they thought it would be good for six-year-old Shane to observe the procedure. They felt as though Shane might learn something from the experience. The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker ‘s family surrounded him. Shane seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last time, that I wondered if he understood what was going on. Within a few minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away.

The little boy seemed to accept Belker’s transition without any difficulty or confusion. We sat together for a while after Belker’s Death, wondering aloud about the sad fact that animal lives are shorter than human lives.
Shane, who had been listening quietly, piped up, ”I know why.”

Startled, we all turned to him. What came out of his mouth next stunned me. I’d never heard a more comforting explanation. It has changed the way I try and live.

He said,”People are born so that they can learn how to live a good life — like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?” The Six-year-old continued,

”Well, dogs already know how to do that, so they don’t have to stay as long.”

Live simply.

Love generously.

Care deeply.

Speak kindly.

Remember, if a dog was the teacher you would learn things like:

When loved ones come home, always run to greet them.

Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joyride.

Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in your face to be pure Ecstasy.

Take naps.

Stretch before rising.

Run, romp, and play daily.

Thrive on attention and let people touch you.

Avoid biting when a simple growl will do.

On warm days, stop to lie on your back on the grass.

On hot days, drink lots of water and lie under a shady tree.

When you’re happy, dance around and wag your entire body.

Delight in the simple joy of a long walk.

Be loyal.

Never pretend to be something you’re not.

If what you want lies buried, dig until you find it.

When someone is having a bad day, be silent, sit close by, and nuzzle them gently.

Great story – and they were darn lucky to have an Irish Wolfhound that lived to 10 – the breed tends to be short-lived because of their size.

Thank you so much for sharing this story. We just recently put our 14 year old dog to sleep. We wrestled with the notion of having our 3 year old be around for it and in the end she was home with us and showed so much strength. Childern & Animals really are little blessings of Hope & Love.

So wonderful. We had a devastating loss of our beloved Terra to unknown causes when she was 7 months old. We were devistated but took comfort that we had her to love, even for such a short time. Now we have her sister Tia, born with the next litter of pups, so now when we look at her we always remember Terra. Terra sure knew how to love us and touched our hearts forever deeply.

being a veterinarian myself, my children were exposed to death at a very early age. Children grasp things way easier and simplier than we adults give them credit for. My children know and understand much about life because of being around the animals.

on a side note, i have a 6 mo old irish wolfhound named finnegan. awesome dogs!

Thank you. My aunt died yesterday, completely unexpectedly and a good 20 years earlier than most members of our family. It seemed so wrong, because she was one of the kindest, most loving people, and every memory I have of her is warm and happy, and it seemed so unfair that we had to lose her so soon. This helps more than you could imagine.

This is incredible, “out of the mouth of babes” this is the hardest part of having animals, and yet, we know it ends their suffering, I now have a mini longhaired daschound, he is three, and my little buddy, who loves me unconditionally, and me him, even thought he went to grab a toy from my hand and caught my baby finger in the Rheumatoid joint, I cryed like a baby it hurt so, but he kneeled at my feet immediately knowing he had hurt me, he was extra careful the rest of the day and I was sure to tell him, I love him and know he didn’t mean it, anymore then me catching a few hairs of his flag like tail, under my shoe when he stands and it pulls, they teach us all, and are wonderful creatures, RIP Belker, along with my companions from the past, Cub, Ben, Brandy, Fluffy, Sammy, Milo, Tiger, Rocky, Kitty, Nikita, Puddy, and Buffy!!! Among the ‘dog teacher’ analogy, you neglected to mention:

    1. If you can catch the squirrel on the fence, make sure to eat all of it..

    2. Bark, because you can..

    3. Nothing feels better than someone rubbing your belly or scratching under you chin.

    4. Just because the toilet has water doesn’t mean you have to drink out of it.

Having raised and rescued 10 Irish Wolfhounds over the years, I can truly relate. We had more than a few that lived over 10 years but lost some in their early years as well. Whenever possible we were with them when they died and our hearts broke every time for they surely were dear and loyal friends. Karen @ houndsrun

A friend shared this link with me after hearing I had to put down my best friend Jonae (Boxer) down yesterday after finding out she had a massive bone tumor that caused her to have a profound limp.

Brought tears to my eyes…for a 6 year old to say that just puts it all into perspective. Thank you for sharing.

UNFORTUNATELY maturity equates to losing such raw-innocence; which in-turn also results in the loss of pure-honesty……WHEN DOES maturity do THAT to us??? Perhaps why I cling to my immaturity!!

My best feline friend in the world was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma (his particular tumor was located under his tongue) only 5 weeks ago. I read this article about a week after his diagnosis and couldn’t stop crying. Today I made the hardest decision i believe I have ever had an will ever have to make by letting him go. I felt by giving him pain medication every twelve hours and hospice care was doing the right thing but watching him lose weight and putting his entire face in his food to try and get a little bit of food made me realize I’m keeping him alive for myself and it felt cruel. Reading this article again made me smile a tiny bit through my many tears

Thank you for the reminder of how simple it all is. Reggie our 8 1/2 year old standard poodle died this weekend peacefully at home. We were given him 2 years ago and felt so blessed by his “dolphin like” love. I feel he left because it is time for all of us to love each other just like he did…unconditionally and gently and peacefully. What a grand teacher you are Reggie. Your timing is perfect.

The human canine relationship has existed since the begining of modern man(or before), It transends the limits of our understanding. It is a bond that goes well beyond anything that our intellectual minds can justify. It is complementary, spiritual , and unconditional. I pity anyone who cannot imaginine it and I applaud anyone who can explain it so perfectly. Shane obviously has wisdom well beyond his years!

The following time I read a blog, I hope that it doesnt disappoint me as much as this one. I imply, I do know it was my choice to learn, but I truly thought youd have something attention-grabbing to say. All I hear is a bunch of whining about something that you would fix should you werent too busy searching for attention.
