Tammy Lawrence-Daley relived the horrifying hours of her January attack at the Majestic Elegance resort during a Friday interview

The 51-year-old had been on vacation with her husband at the Majestic Elegance Resort in the Dominican Republic when she says that she went out alone to get a snack at 10.30pm.

She claims that the man pushed her from behind and she tried to fight him off, only to lose consciousness as he beat her.

‘When I came to, it was to him beating me,’ Lawrence-Daley said. ‘About the head. Kicking me and beating me.’

She said: 'You just have a feeling of safety and a feeling of, you know, paradise, but this can happen. It has happened and it will happen again.'

She said: ‘You just have a feeling of safety and a feeling of, you know, paradise, but this can happen. It has happened and it will happen again.’

Lawrence-Daley was found hours after the attack in an underground crawl space.

She spent days in a local hospital and underwent months of physical and emotional therapy. A rape kit was administered but too much time had past for there to be definitive results.

She said: ‘You just have a feeling of safety and a feeling of, you know, paradise, but this can happen. It has happened and it will happen again.’

And while she is thankful to be alive, Lawrence-Daley does blame herself for the attack.

Lawrence-Daley was found hours after the attack in an underground crawl space. She spent days in a local hospital and underwent months of physical and emotional therapy.

‘I just, if I didn’t go down there by myself, it wouldn’t have happened,’ Lawrence-Daley said. ‘I wouldn’t have put my family through that.’

She would later state in an interview with People: ‘I internalize this. ‘This is my fault, I got myself into this situation. I feel horrendous that I put my husband and my friends through this situation. Their lives are changed forever, as well as mine.’

The person responsible for the attack has not been found and Lawrence-Daley said that police investigation led nowhere. The hotel has not taken responsibility for the attack.

‘I really hate the way they handled everything,’ she said.

‘I’m at the point where I feel strong enough that I want to get this information out there because women need to understand they can’t walk around by themselves. I hate to say that, but it’s the truth. What I went through, I would never wish on anyone.’

And the mother-of-two shared that her life has been altered by the attack.

‘I always said the one thing I loved about myself was my smile,’ she said. ‘I always have a smile for everybody, I love my sense of humor and that’s the one thing that guy stole from me. He stole my smile and that just kills me.’

She has since returned to her job as a finance manager but shared that she now has to stay in a personal office.

‘I do have issues today reacting to men and them coming at me, even in a friendly manner … My head is on a swivel,’ she said. ‘I’m looking out the corner of my eye, I’m turning around. I can’t walk down corridors without having panic attacks.’

Lawrence-Daley had been staying at the all-inclusive resort in Punta Cana with her husband Christoper and another couple when the attack occurred.

In a lengthy Facebook post detailing the attack, Lawrence-Daley shared photos of her gruesome, bruised and bloodied facial injuries.

The mother-of-two said she spent five days in a local hospital recovering and had to have surgery to repair her injuries – some of which she is still reeling from four months later.

Lawrence-Daley claims she was attacked by a hotel employee because she remembers seeing him in a uniform with the resort logo on it. She has accused the resort of refusing to claim responsibility for the incident. has contacted Majestic Elegance for comment.

She said the attack occurred on her second day at the resort at about 10.30pm when she stepped out of her room to get a snack and take photos of the moon from the beach.

She recalls telling her husband that she would be back in five minutes but Lawrence-Daley said she ended up going missing for eight hours.

Lawrence-Daley said she remembers being ‘plowed into from behind’ and felt her attacker’s arms around her as he pulled her into a nearby unlocked maintenance room.

‘I fought with everything I had at that moment. He was too strong. The next eight hours brought me pain and fear,’ she said.

Lawrence-Daley said she can remember being strangled multiple times and that she repeatedly fell unconscious.

She said her attacker later dragged her down concrete stairs to an underground waste water area in what she says was an attempt to hide her body and mask the sound of the attack.

‘I was kicked in the head, I was beaten with a club. And then strangled again for the kill; at which time he disposed of my body into an area I refer to as the ‘hole’,’ she said.

‘I was unconscious multiple times during this savage attack, so I have no idea what else was done to me during that time. Somehow I survived.’

She claims her husband and friends went to the front desk three times after she went missing before security started to look for her.

In her Facebook post, Lawrence-Daley said the hotel security took a quad bike down to the beach assuming she was ‘drunk somewhere’.

‘I went missing at 10.30 and was found over eight hours later. It was hell,’ she said.

After being found the following day, Lawrence-Daley said she spent five days in a local hospital to have surgery for her undisclosed injuries.

‘I am still dealing with several issues, including nerve damage, as well as, all of the medical expenses since being home,’ she said.

‘Majestic Elegance claims no responsibility for the attack since I couldn’t identify the attacker even though he was wearing a uniform with the resort logo and hit me directly in front of the unlocked maintenance room and dragged me down concrete stairs to a basement so that no one could hear or find me.

‘Police did find evidence of the blood smeared mop handle and a maintenance hat in the area I was found but this means nothing in these countries.’

She said she was speaking out about her ordeal in a bid to warn other travelers to be wary.

‘This man thought he killed me, but he failed. He is still out there, a predator, waiting for his next victim. Only the next woman may not be so fortunate. Please, please do not walk alone. These attacks are happening too frequently and the criminals are not being prosecuted even though evidence is found.

‘Victims are not being compensated for medical or pain and suffering, and the resorts are not held liable. Majestic Elegance didn’t offer to reimburse us for our vacation, let alone my current medical bills.

‘When you are in unfamiliar places, or even in familiar places, please remember… be smart, be safe.’

5G Cell towers are more dangerous and will fry eggs on your chest while you sleep!

Why 5G Cell Towers Are More Dangerous

All cell towers emit Radio Frequency (RF) Radiation. This is what makes them dangerous. Plans to transition to the new 5G around the world is already underway.  Soon every city will be retrofitted with this technology. Mini cell stations will be placed all throughout our neighborhoods and cities. They will be installed on the sides or tops of buildings and on street light poles.

5G cell towers are more dangerous than other cell towers for two main reasons. First, compared to earlier versions, 5G is ultra high frequency and ultra high intensity. Second, since the shorter length millimeter waves (MMV) used in 5G do not travel as far (or through objects), with our current number of cell towers the cell signal will not be reliable. To compensate many more mini cell towers must be installed. It is estimated that they will need a mini cell tower every 2 to 8 houses. This will greatly increase our RF Radiation exposure.

1G, 2G, 3G and 4G use between 1 to 5 gigahertz frequency. 5G uses between 24 to 90 gigahertz frequency. Within the RF Radiation portion of the electromagnetic spectrum, the higher the frequency the more dangerous it is to living organisms.

With RF Radiation, how close the source is to our physical bodies, is more important than the power level (or wattage) of the radiation. RF Radiation dissipates with distance. In other words, a low powered exposure right next to someone, is more dangerous than a more powerful exposure a long ways away. Also the longer the exposure time is, the more dangerous it is. 5G will be the worst of both worlds. We will have more sources around us, and closer to us. And they will be more powerful and continuous emissions.

In the below video I explain in a bit more detail why 5G is more dangerous than previous technologies. I apologize for looking so beat in this video. I really should not have tried to do a video when I was so tired. This is a video I will be re-doing. However the information is very good and super important. It is a short video and very much worth watching.

RF Radiation Dangers

There have been hundreds of peer reviewed scientific studies done on RF Radiation linking it to health problems such as cancer, DNA damage (especially in fetuses within the 1st 100 days after conception), and sterility in men. And even the World Health Organization classified RF Radiation as a possible “carcinogenic”, meaning “cancer causing”, in 2011. To research some of the actual peer reviewed scientific studies on both general RF Radiation, and 5G, see the “Scientific Studies” page of this website. We will also go over a few of these studies below in this article.

Mini 5G Cell Tower In Your Home

Many people do not realize that they already have a mini cell tower emitting high levels of RF Radiation in their homes and offices right now. Some even have a 5G mini cell tower. We call them WiFi routers. Just like a cell tower, a WiFi router emits at full power 24 hours a day 7 days a week, or as long as you have it turned on. It’s range includes your entire home and beyond. It’s radiation is the exact same RF Radiation that a cell tower emits, or that your microwave oven uses to cook your food.

Report this ad

For example, my WiFi router is a Netgear 5 GHz router that emits both at the 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz frequencies. A microwave oven uses 2.45 GHz frequency to cook food. The new 5G WiFi routers that are available now use the 60 GHz, 5 GHz and the 2.4 GHz frequencies. So having one of those routers is really like having a 5G mini cell tower inside of your home.

WiFi Router Guard

It is possible to protect yourself from the RF Radiation emitted by your WiFi router. In the picture to the left you can see something called a Wifi Router Guard. By putting your WiFi router in one of these it will block between 90% and 95% of the RF Radiation they emit. And the amazing part is you will still be able to use the WiFi.  In my case our WiFi does not seem slow anywhere in our 3 bedroom home.

In the below video I measure the amount of RF Radiation emitted by my 5 GHz Netgear WiFi router. Then I place it in a Wifi Router Guard and test it again so you can see how much RF Radiation it blocks. It is a short video but definitely worth watching.

Electromagnetic Radiation

In the chart below you see what is called the “electromagnetic spectrum”. The “Radio waves” and “Microwaves” part of the spectrum is what is referred to as RF Radiation. So microwaves are just a higher frequency radio wave. And remember that within the RF Radiation part of the electromagnetic spectrum, the higher the frequency the more dangerous the waves are to living organisms. (This is not the case in the infrared and visible light portions of the spectrum.)
RF Radiation Scientific Studies

In Germany, researchers studied 1000 residents who lived in close proximity to two cell phone towers for about 10 years. According to the study, during the last five years of the observations, researchers discovered neighbors living within 400 meters of the cell towers were diagnosed with cancer at a rate that was three times higher than those who lived much further away.

Another frightening study in 1994, well before 3G, 4G and 5G, links significant health problems with people living in a London apartment building with a cell phone mast on the roof. In this study, the cancer rate of those living on the top floor of the apartment building- the closet to the tower, had a cancer rate of 10 times the average in England.

If that isn’t enough to convince you there is a significant link between cell phone towers and health problems consider a recent study in Italy. In March 2018, the researchers at the world-renowned Ramazzini Institute released the shocking results of a large-scale study of lab animals exposed to cell tower radiation over a lifetime.

“The Ramazzini study exposed 2448 Sprague-Dawley rats from prenatal life until their natural death to “environmental” cell tower radiation for 19 hours per day. RI exposures mimicked base station emissions like those from cell tower antennas, and exposure levels were far less than those used in the NTP studies of cell phone radiation.”-

NTP refers to the National Toxicology Program study that recently linked cell phone radiation to heart cancer in male rats.  The Ramazzini study is the first to complete a study of this scale, over a significant period of time. Together, the studies make a strong argument for more guidelines and standards to protect public health. Health experts from around the world are weighing in on the significance of the findings and urging the World Health Organization to act.

“This study raises concerns that simply living close to a cell tower will pose threats to human health. Governments need to take measures to reduce exposures from cell tower emissions. Cell towers should not be near schools, hospitals or people’s homes.  Public health agencies need to educate the public on how to reduce exposure from all sources of wireless radiofrequency radiation- be it from cell towers or cell phones or Wi-Fi in schools,” said Dr. David Carpenter, former Dean of the School of Public Health and the University of Albany.

“This is particularly urgent because current plans to place small 5G cell towers about every 300 meters in every street across the country.  These 5G “small cell’ antennas will result in continuous exposure to everyone living nearby and everyone walking down the street.  The increased exposures will increase the risk of cancer and other diseases such as electro-hypersensitivity,” said Dr. Carpenter.

The risk is very real. As Dr. Carpenter indicated, public health is at risk with plans for more and more smaller towers to go up on every street corner around the world.

According to experts, doctors and researchers, radiation has the power to change our bodies on the cellular level. These changes, as supported in several studies, create a perfect environment for cancer and other ailments to take over inside our body.

Other studies link cell phone and cell tower radiation to memory loss, headaches, changes in vision and mood, sleep disorders and leukemia. The rollout of 5G and the infrastructure to support it will only increase our risk of suffering major health issues down the road.

Cell Tower Radiation Measured

In the below video I am standing next to an office building that just had a huge cell tower built right next to it. From the office building I measure how much RF Radiation the cell tower is raining down upon the office building. I just cannot believe they build these things so close to people.

5G: What Do The Studies Say?

As companies prepare to make 5G a reality, may doctors and scientists believe the technology will be a “massive public health experiment.”

According to Dr. Joel Moskowitz, a public health professor at the University of California, the increase in mini-cell towers across towns and cities is only part of the concern. Dr. Moskowitz says the lower frequency millimeter waves used in 5G could cause major skin, eye, and nervous system problems.

Report this ad

“The deployment of 5G, or fifth generation cellular technology, constitutes a massive experiment on the health of all species… Because MMWs are weaker than microwaves, they are predominantly absorbed by the skin, meaning their distribution is quite focused there.  Since skin contains capillaries and nerve endings, MMW bio-effects may be transmitted through molecular mechanisms by the skin or through the nervous system,” said Dr. Moskowitz.

Dr. Moskowitz also believes that MMV can make some pathogens resistant to antibiotics.

Dr. Moskowitz is not alone in his concern about 5G.  Dr. Yael Stein from Jerusalem’s Hebrew University recently wrote a letter to the Federal Communications Commission outlining his major concerns about 5G, MMV and how it could impact human skin.

Dr. Stein argues the human skin has the ability to absorb more than 90% of microwave radiation and will cause major problems from head to toe- especially for the vulnerable such as kids, elderly and pregnant women.

MMVs are also believed to cause physical pain. A recent article in Eluxe Magazine takes a deeper look at the issue.  According to the article, MMVs could cause pain receptors to flare up in the human body, and cause great damage to our eyes, cell growth and compromise our immune system.

In fact, the U.S. Government currently uses MMV energy as a non-lethal weapon.  This weapon is direct and more intense than the MMVs from a 5G network, however, it’s similar and concerning.  According to the U.S Department of Defense, the active denial system creates a focused MMV beam that is capable of penetrating the skin, which can create a burning or a stinging sensation.

Some experts even argue 5G will have a devastating impact on our environment as well. A 2010 linked aspen leaf damage to MMV exposure.  Some researchers also found MMV’s can cause cell damage in wheat plants, impact wildlife and affect our atmosphere.

Only time will tell how the 5G network will impact our health and the environment. We know existing cell towers are dangerous and with plans to build thousands, if not millions more- it could become very interesting.  It’s clear though, MMVs are not safe for the general public- especially considering we will be exposed everywhere we go, even at home.

Ways to Reduce Exposure to 5G

5G is expected to be ready to go by 2020 so you have plenty of time to prepare and make plans to reduce your exposure to MMVs and other cell towers. Because 5G towers will be everywhere it will be difficult to avoid all exposure, so you’ll have to take care of your immune system and make healthy choices.

Boosting your immune system with natural fruits and vegetables is a great way to keep your cells healthy and keep diseases at bay. In addition to making healthy food choices, you can take several precautions around your home.

Report this ad

Some experts believe the best way to keep cell tower radiation from penetrating your home is to create a highly conductive enclosure around your home. So, what does this mean? It means first measuring the levels of radiation with HF35C meter. This meter will give you various levels throughout your home and determine what areas you need to focus on first.  Right now, there are various window coverings, paints that will keep radiation from penetrating your home.

Many doctors suggest keeping your distance from the cell towers in question. This could be very hard to do given these 5G towers will be on every corner on every building. Unless you never leave the house, I don’t see this as being a realistic expectation.

I’m hoping there will be an app or map listing all the cell phone towers in every neighborhood, in every city across the world. This would certainly make it easier to know where the new 5G towers are located and how to avoid them when necessary. This information would be helpful to those who are exceptionally vulnerable to cell tower radiation such as children, infants, elderly and pregnant women.

Reducing Radiation In Your Home

While you can’t control where the cell towers go, you can control how and when you use your own cell phone. By limiting your time on your phone and using radiation blocking cases and shielding headsets, you can greatly reduce your exposure to cell phone radiation. Every little bit helps. Please see also our article entitled “Why Are 5 GHz WiFi Routers More Dangerous?

Also, if you have an office- make sure you turn off your Wi-Fi router when you’re not using it. And keep your cell phone out of your room at night. Various studies link cell phone radiation to disruptive sleep patterns. When you don’t sleep well, it can throw off your entire day.  By leaving your cell phone out of your room at night, you’ll never have to count sheep again.

Take a closer look at your meter outside your house. Many power companies are switching to smart meters. These meters take the guesswork out of how much energy you are using. Smart meters wirelessly transmit data constantly throughout the day, giving the power companies real-time information about your energy consumption. Smart meters take the place of meter readers. Smart meters, however, transmit harmful levels of radiation. If you can, get a smart meter guard to protect you and your family from harmful radiation.  You can purchase a smart meter guard for your router and cell phone for under $100.

By reducing your risk of radiation, you can improve your chances of staying healthy and living a long and joyful life.

If you have kids, pay attention to the Wi-Fi situation at school and in their classrooms.  Some studies link ADD, ADHD, memory issues, and behavior problems with Wi-Fi routers and nearby cell towers.  Cell phone towers are a big business for school districts.  Many districts across the country are selling or renting land for cell phone towers. If this is happening in your neighborhood, speak up.  It’s only going to become more prevalent with the rollout of 5G.

Why Are Companies Pushing 5G?

5G is the wave of the future. This advanced bandwidth will allow you to download movies in a matter of seconds and is expected to support at least a100 billion devices. That’s a whole lot of devices one bandwidth.  In general, 5G will be up to 100 times faster than 4G. That’s fast!

5G stands for 5th generation cellular technology.  This is the latest development in the cellular world.  Major cell phone companies and other tech giants are making progress right now to be ready to launch 5G capable devices by 2020.

I won’t get over technical but in general, 5G will make technology faster, smarter and create a more connected world.  According to Tech Radar, 5G will have an average download speed of about 1GBps (1 gigabyte per second).

With faster connectivity, this network will be capable of supporting the Internet of Things, your personal devices and various networks without any delay. Plus, with 5G the connections will be more reliable as well. No more dropped calls or delays when trying to browse the internet.

“It’s all about making better use of the radio spectrum and enabling far more devices to access the mobile internet at the same time”-BBC.

5G is being touted as the golden ticket to cellular connectivity. More speed, less waiting and more people and things connected than ever before.  However, as I mentioned earlier, advances in technology will no doubt have an impact on our health- impacts we may not even realize are happening until it’s too late.

 How Will 5G Work?

5G is the super highway for speed, information, and connections.  To create this incredible speed and reliability, 5G uses the millimeter wave. This millimeter wave operates between 30GHZ and 300 GHz. According to the BBC, “The higher-frequency bands have a lot of capacity but their shorter wavelengths mean their range is lower.” This means the 5G signal is easily blocked by buildings, cars, planes, plants and other objects.

Because the signal will face so many obstacles, an entire web of small-mini cell towers will need to go up in every city, on every block in every neighborhood around the world. No word yet on exactly how many towers or small masts will need to be installed to support this network.  It could easily add up to billions of towers.

A recent article in the UK estimated at least 400,000 extra phone masts would be needed to bring rural Britain to be 5G compatible. That’s just the rural part of Britain.  It’s estimated there could be thousands of extra small masts in every single city around the world.

According to experts, the 5G masts will be about four feet tall- not nearly the same height as needed with 4G and 3G networks. These towers will be around every corner and will make communicating with your house, car, and family a breeze. However, being that connected- with so many signals around may cause major health problems. I’ll address this later on in this article.

So, who decides where these towers will go? That’s a great question and one local government across the country and world are addressing right now. However, internet and cell phone providers have lobbyists working with state lawmakers to restrict how much say local government has as to where and when the 5G network cell towers will be placed.  As I write this article, 13 states have laws on the books to limit local governments from having a say in the 5G process.

The Difference Between 3G, 4G, and 5G

To understand why 5G cell towers are more dangerous than other cell towers, we need to take a closer look at how each network operates. As I mentioned earlier, 5G is the 5th generation of cellular technology and needs shorter waves to function at a high speed.  Shorter waves mean there’s a greater need for more cell towers because these specific waves have lots of obstacles.

Let’s start with 3G.  3G stands for the 3rd generation of cellular technology.  This advancement in technology was unveiled in 2003. 3G operates using cellular technology, as in the signals are passed from tower to tower.  Then onto the next cell phone tower and so on. This continues until you answer your phone, find your answer on Google and finish watching YouTube.

Cell phone companies strategically place the cell towers in various locations and different heights to give you the best signal possible.  3G was mostly used to make phone calls, texting, and limited internet use.

With 3G the signal can travel farther- however, there has to be another tower around to pick up the signal and you’re moving.  If there isn’t another tower then you experience a temporary interruption in service. With 3G you need fewer towers than 5G to operate. Fewer towers mean less exposure to potentially harmful cell tower radiation.

3G is also referred to as mobile broadband. This term became a catchy way to sell phones and tablets in the mid-2000s. Mobile broadband basically means there are enough cell towers to keep your signal connected while you’re moving around town or traveling around the world!

The data speeds for 3G are much slower than 4G and certainly much slower than 5G.

Report this ad

Let’s take a closer look at 4G.  4G is what most of us are using today. It’s the reason you can Facetime with your best friend in Europe or download an entire movie on your tablet.  Some tech experts describe 4G as removing speed bumps in the cellular signal, “allowing traffic to move much faster.”

4G uses cell towers, just like with 3G- however, the speed at which data and information can travel is much different.  4G uses more bandwidth than 3G, which means towers need to be more powerful.  The more powerful the cell phone towers, the more potential for radiation to be emitted into our environment.

Even though 4G is more powerful than the 3G network- it’s not nearly as powerful as 5G. 5G is the super horse, a new wave of technology designed to connect everything via the internet.  It’s a game changer.  This big shift could mean big health consequences as well.

Future of 5G

The future is here and companies are building the infrastructure needed to create a full world-wide rollout of 5G by 2020.  AT&T is leading the way in this major effort to make cities 5G compatible.  In July, the tech giant announced plans to have the 5G infrastructure in place and ready to go in 12 cities by the end of this year. Verizon and T-Mobile are also planning limited rollouts of 5G in the next year or so.

There is still a lot of work to be done on the 5G front.  In May, Verizon announced Los Angeles will be one of the first cities in America to make the move to 5G. This is not a small feat by any means. According to an article in Tech Crunch, Lowell McAdam, Chief Executive for Verizon, said the company purchased 36 million miles of fiber so they can support the hundreds of megahertz of bandwidth needed to deliver “the whole suite of 5G.” McAdam said Verizon has added 1,000 extra cell sites in LA to make the 5G experience possible.

Verizon also has plans to bring Boston and other major cities into the 5G era as soon as possible. AT&T announced it’s working on 5G capabilities in Atlanta, Dallas, and Waco, TX.  Sprint says its bringing 5G to NYC, Phoenix and Kansas City.

Right now, AT&T is running 5G trials in Waco, TX, and Dallas. South Korea unveiled its 5G system during the Winter Olympics this year.

South Korea, Sweden, Turkey, Japan, and China are also working hard to create a seamless transition to 5G. Some industry insiders are calling the 5G networks a technological revolution.  The information, data, and insights made possible by 5G will change how people interact with each other and how businesses operate. According to one article I recently read, 5G has the power to increase revenue across a variety of industries- to the tune of $12 trillion dollars. Yes, trillion dollars.

“Unlike its predecessors though, 5G is a technological paradigm shift, akin to the shift from typewriter to computer. And it isn’t just a network. 5G will become the underlying fabric of an entire ecosystem of fully connected intelligent sensors and devices, capable of overhauling economic and business policies, and further blurring geographical and cultural borders. It will be capable of delivering at every rung of the ecosystem’s ladder and will provide seamless, continuous connectivity for business applications,” Technology Review.

“All industries will feel the effects of the shift to 5G. In particular, automotive, health care, and the Internet of Things (IoT) are expected to bring about dramatic transformations in our daily lives.”- Technology Review.

Most companies in the United States hope to have the 5G infrastructure in place by 2020.  Each country has its own timeline on a 5G rollout.

Will I need a new Phone/Tablet?

Yes, you will most likely need to buy a new phone to take advantage of the speed and reliability promised by 5G. However, if you like your phone and don’t want to spend the extra money, your current 4G phone will continue to work just fine- for now.

As I mentioned earlier, 5G offers more bandwidth- which means it can support more data.  This network is also more reliable. Some cell phone and tech companies are already offering 5G compatible phones and tablets that make the most out of the new technology.

Your phone is only part of the 5G equation. You may have to pay more for 5G service. It’s unclear what the new plans will cost, but it’s likely all the major carriers will be competitive to keep customers from jumping ship. In general, you get what you pay for.  Better service will mean you will have to pay at least more than your currently used to.  Time to start your 5G fund!

5G and You

There’s no doubt 5G will change our physical and virtual landscape. However, it’s clear this technology comes with major health concerns too. The wave of the future may also mean a wave of new cancers, illnesses, and disabilities.

More research and studies need to be completed before the entire 5G rollout is complete. The potential health consequences associated with the 5G infrastructure is too great to ignore.   If you can, stay in contact with your government and advocate for local control over where 5G mini cell towers are located. We must approach this new technology with respect and caution.

Trump Furious That Another Baby Is Getting All The Attention

WASHINGTON (The Borowitz Report)—President Donald J. Trump is reportedly “seething with envy” and “furious” that another baby is suddenly getting all the attention, White House aides have confirmed.

The aides, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that Trump was “beside himself” after watching cable news cover a baby other than himself all Monday morning.

“He can’t understand why they are suddenly obsessed with this baby,” one aide said. “He thinks he should be the only baby that people are thinking about, and this new baby is driving him nuts.”

According to the aide, Trump even threatened to slap new tariffs on China in the hopes of stealing attention away from the baby, but to no avail.

“Honestly, I feel bad for him,” the aide said. “He’s used to being the youngest person, and now there’s someone younger.”

America’s new recycling crisis, explained by an expert

For 30 years, China took in the world’s plastic. What happened when they stopped?

By Micaela Marini Higgs

China has been taking US plastic waste for three decades. In 2017, they stopped.

For all the campaigns encouraging people to recycle more, few lay out exactly what happens to our recyclables once they go into the blue bin. Rather than our milk jugs magically reincarnating into toys on their own, for nearly three decades American recyclables were shipped cheaply to China, where they could be sold and given new shape.

That worked well enough, until China started cracking down. With dirty waste continuing to appear in imported recyclables, the rising cost of labor, and an abundance of the country’s own potentially recyclable waste, China no longer had the same financial and environmental incentives to accept the world’s waste.

Within the recycling community, there had been rumblings that China might change its policies, but the force of Operation National Sword, announced in July 2017, still came as a surprise. Going into full effect last March, it banned 24 types of scrap and implemented much stricter and more rigorous contamination standards which have been described as “impossible to reach.” As a result, local governments and the recycling industry are now facing an unprecedented recycling crisis, especially in plastics.

Plastic recycling must now meet “impossible” contamination standards.

To put the impact of this current crisis into the context of past waste crises — like the Love Canal Disaster, where a residential neighborhood was built on a toxic waste dump with disastrous consequences, leading to the formation of the EPA’s Superfund program — and to understand how the effects of this policy are being felt across the United States, The Goods spoke to Kate O’Neill, an associate professor in the Department of Environmental Science, Policy and Management at UC Berkeley. Specializing in global environmental politics and the global politics of waste, her upcoming book Waste explores the extent to which waste can be a resource, and she has written and spoken extensively about the recycling trade with China.

What’s the history of the US sending recyclables to China?

China imported most of the world’s scrap, the good stuff as well as the more problematic, especially as its industry started to boom in the late ’90s and early 2000s. It was also connected with China’s entry into the World Trade Organization in 2001. That was a period where China’s growth started booming. It was shipping goods to Europe and the States and that enabled a cheap process of shipping the scrap back to China in the holds of the ships that had brought all the stuff over. So that made it cheaper to ship to China than, say, to ship recycling across the country. And China was the market — that’s where it went to be used. We were shipping it to China because there was demand from its manufacturing sector because it wasn’t producing enough virgin plastic. So there was an economic rationale.

Is it that China doesn’t need our recyclables now that they have enough of their own?

It produces plastics for its domestic market and has a lot of plastic scrap of its own to recycle. This is very similar to the dynamics with electronic waste, because China imported a lot of that for a while, and illegally for quite a while too, and then started really cleaning up its recycling villages and creating more industrial parks for domestic recycling. It’s trying to do the same with plastics.

I also think Beijing is very concerned about their environmental quality and image overseas. As China is taking on this role as the world’s economic superpower, there are aspects that are not just pure economics or military power, but a sort of leadership by example. We see it with efforts in China to combat climate change. I also think that they were very concerned about being seen as the world’s dump site.

How do past rumblings and claims of crisis compare to now? Is the shit hitting the fan?

Oh, the shit’s hitting the fan. Operation Green Fence was the 2013 effort to just start getting exporting countries to clean their recycling, their plastics in particular. That sent ripples, but that was more enforcing existing legislation, it wasn’t a severe cut in contamination limits. The recycling industry saw it as more of a, “Well, let’s kind of clean up our act at the collection stage and not bother the consumers with this.” What happened was that suddenly a whole cleaning services industry sprang up in Southeast Asia, so you knew you could ship it to Malaysia where it would be cleaned if it didn’t meet China’s specifications.

Absolutely no one thinks they’re going to lift this restriction at any point, and it’s really been exacerbated by the trade war with the US. [China has] had periodic disruptions, just temporary ones, on the import of other kinds of scrap like iron, copper, and aluminum. But there’s demand in their own recycling industries for that so it’d be tricky for Beijing to say no to importing that kind of scrap. But plastics now, no one sees any lifting on those restrictions anytime soon.

It seems like this is a type of crisis we’ve never had to face before, but based on impact does it compare to anything else?

Only nuclear waste. Obviously it’s not the same as a widespread nuclear waste accident, but I think it’s the most widespread, and I would definitely call this the most high-profile and prolonged period I’ve seen waste in the global press in many, many years.

Thinking back over early waste crises, again, it’s not quite the same danger to human health, but it’s on par with Love Canal and those big events in the ’60s and ’70s. We’ve really been displacing those risks — out of sight, out of mind — either to poor minority communities in the case of hazardous waste, or now to displacing our plastic and paper waste to communities where — although it’s used in China — it was being disassembled and reprocessed by people who are very much being exposed to the worst risks.

How is this going to start impacting our lives here in the US?

It already has in so many ways. There’s the ripple effect for our lives and also globally. Initially the plan was just to divert the plastics to different places like Southeast Asia. That has not been working because countries like Malaysia and Thailand have become overwhelmed with plastic and stopped importing. India just announced it would not take plastics, so the quest for markets is still ongoing.

There’s a lot of campaigns for consumer education, getting rid of what the industry calls “wish cycling” [the well-intentioned attempt to recycle nonrecyclables, which causes contamination and more waste] and encouraging people to properly wash recyclables. You’ve got a shift away from single-stream recycling, when you put everything into the one big container, to multiple stream, where you’re separating recyclables into different containers.

We’re seeing an increase in landfilling, and because most states have fees for landfills, that’s creating an additional expense [for municipalities]. Plastics went from [selling for] like $300 a ton at their peak to now where you almost have to pay to get rid of them. Municipalities are cutting back on their recycling and what they will pick up, some places have stopped recycling altogether. This includes not just plastic but also glass, not because it was ever exported to China but because it’s difficult and expensive to recycle in the first place, so when you’re losing money because of plastics you’re not going to keep propping up a real economic loss generator like glass.

After years of hearing that we should recycle more, it’s pretty shocking to realize that we don’t have an infrastructure that can deal with all of it.

Recycling started in the ’70s and ’80s but it took a while to really spread and certainly to become kind of mandatory. [Over the past 20 years] there was no matching or building of recycling capacity along with the increase in recycling programs. I was living in New York in the mid ’90s and I remember when the recycling came in, that maps directly onto the years when we started exporting to China.

There’s an interesting debate warming up about if we should focus on improving our recycling or if that is going to enable our continued consumption of plastics. In other words, let’s not focus on recycling, let’s just focus on not using plastics. I personally think that we need to do both, and I’m concerned about this argument that we shouldn’t even be improving recycling, that we just need to focus on not using plastic, because that seems like a lot harder of a goal to reach.

A third of pet owners would consider making their animal vegan, according to a new study

  • About a third of people are interested in putting their pets on a vegan diet, according to a new study.
  • And 27% of vegan respondents have already done so.
  • Over half said certain measures would need to be met before they committed to the change.
  • More research is needed before experts can recommend a vegan diet for potential nutritional benefits.

Veganism has been on the rise among humans for a while, but new research shows the trend has started to gain momentum in the animal kingdom.

A survey of more than 3,670 dog and cat owners from around the world found that 35% are interested in putting their pets on a vegan diet while 27% of respondents who follow a vegan diet themselves have already done so.

More than half (55%) said that certain measures would need to be met in order for them to commit to changing their pet’s diets, such as gaining veterinarian approval and ensuring their animal’s nutritional needs are met.

You might think that those considering the switch are vegan themselves, but in actual fact, just 6% of the survey’s respondents followed the plant-based lifestyle.

The study’s lead author, Dr. Sarah Dodd of the veterinary college at the University of Guelph, Canada — which conducted the study — said she was surprised at how many pet-owners were already feeding their animals exclusively vegan food.

“That percentage, 27%, might sound like a small number, but when you think of the actual numbers of pets involved, that’s huge, and much higher than we expected.”

Cat eating treat

Dodd also stated that the study suggests the interest surrounding vegan pet diets may increase in the coming years.

“People have been hearing about how vegan diets are linked to lowered risks of cancer and other health benefits in humans. There is also growing concern about the environmental impact of animal agriculture.

“So, while only a small proportion of pet-owners are currently feeding plant-based diets to their pets, it is safe to say that interest in the diets is likely to grow.”

But she added that the study, which was published in the journal PLoS One, indicates that more research is needed into the nutritional benefits and consequences of feeding one’s pet a vegan diet.

An RSPCA spokesperson concurred, telling The Independent that there is a paucity of research in terms of vegan pet diets, which renders it difficult to draw any conclusions on its benefits.

“Dogs are omnivores and can eat a wide variety of food types so they can survive on a vegetarian diet as long as the diet is well-balanced,” they said.

It is a different story for cats, however, who are “strict carnivores” and depend on specific nutrients found primarily in meat, such as taurine, vitamin A and arachidonic acid.

“We are aware of vegan/vegetarian pet food which includes these nutrients but these are relatively new to market and we have not seen any long-term studies about the effects of feeding cats a diet like this,” the spokesperson added.

“However, we are also not aware of any cases of health problems associated with them. We would like to see more scientific evidence about the effects of such specialised diets on cats and cannot advise feeding them at this time.”

Peter Frampton Talks Degenerative Muscle Disease Diagnosis, Farewell Tour

“In a year’s time, I might not be able to play,” says Frampton, who was diagnosed with Inclusion-Body Myositis. “I want to go out screaming”

Musician Peter Frampton poses for a portrait in New York. The English-born Frampton, now 65, released, Acoustic Classics, a CD of stripped-down versions of his best-known songs, in FebruaryPeter Frampton Portrait Session, New York, USA - 25 Feb 2016

Peter Frampton decided to launch a final tour after getting diagnosed with the muscle disease Inclusion-Body Myositis.

About eight years ago, Peter Frampton started to notice that his ankles felt a little tight in the morning. He initially dismissed it as one of the many pains that comes with getting older, but as time passed, his legs began feeling weak as well. He tried to ignore the signs that something was wrong until four years ago when a fan kicked a beach ball onto the stage at one of his concerts and he fell over when he tried to kick it back. “My legs just gave out,” he says. “We all joked, ‘He’s fallen and he can’t get up.’ But I was embarrassed.”

Two weeks after the beach ball incident, he tripped over a guitar cord on his stage and collapsed again. He was also noticing that his arms were getting so weak that loading heavy objects onto the overhead compartments of planes was becoming extremely difficult. When his tour had some time off, he finally booked an appointment with a neurologist to see what was happening. He was diagnosed with the inflammatory muscle disease Inclusion-Body Myositis (IBM) and sent to Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, Maryland where he was teamed up with Dr. Lisa Christopher-Stine, the director of their myositis clinic.

“I inherited this incredible team of doctors who are so passionate about what they do that it’s ridiculous,” says Frampton. “Then it was revealed to me that it wouldn’t just affect my legs and my arms, but it’s going to affect my fingers. That was the most troubling thing, obviously, for me.” He is still able to play guitar without any difficulty, but with the window now beginning to possibly close forever, he booked a farewell tour that will keep him on the road this summer and possibly a bit longer.

We spoke to Frampton about coming to terms with IBM, what fans can expect from the tour, the secret albums he’s been frantically recording in Nashville, how the huge success of Frampton Comes Alive! doomed the rest of his career, touring with David Bowie in the Eighties and much more.

You managed to keep this all very secret for the past four years. Nobody knew a thing.
It wasn’t at a place where it was necessary to tell anybody. My children and my band knew. That was it, literally. My crew didn’t even know. At the beginning of the next tour, I fell one more time. “Wow, he must be getting old!” I guess they just thought that. Yes, we did keep it to ourselves until there was a need to bring it up. The need is now because right now I can play great guitar and we are recording like maniacs at my studio in Nashville. We’ve done two albums already. I want to record as much as I can in the shortest space of time. We’re actually working on three projects. I’m very much feeling that I’m playing like always. Some people are saying even better, but I’d let them say that.

In a year’s time, I might not be able to play. Right now, it’s progressing but I’m still at the top of my game. We decided to do a farewell tour now since I don’t want to go out and not be able to play well. If I’m going to do a farewell tour, I want to play good. I want to rock it. I know that this tour, I will be able to do everything I did last year and the year before. That’s the most important thing to me. I want to go out screaming as opposed to, “He can’t play anymore.” I’m not going to do that. I’m a perfectionist and I can’t do that. I want to obviously go out there playing my best at all times until I can’t. That’s why this is the farewell tour. We might be able to do the same thing on a limited basis in Europe in the spring of the following year, but I don’t know that yet.

What sort of setlist are going to put together for these shows?
A bit of everything, I guess. It’s got to be. The fans are hoping we’ll do some stuff we haven’t done in a long time or have never done. We will be digging deep as well as doing the familiar and the needed ones for those who are coming. But we will be diving deep. I have no idea what the setlist will be yet, but it will definitely be different than the last couple of tours.

Are you thinking yet about where the last show might happen?
I’m not because they are still adding them. But I can’t say. I don’t know.

After the last show, might you continue to play select shows and just not tour?
I can’t say at this point. Beyond my fingers, which is the guitar-playing part, there’s my legs too. Getting around is getting more difficult. I don’t want to stop playing. That’s the last thing I want to stop doing. I’m going to be playing as long as I can play, but this will be the last extended tour. I can’t say what I’ll be doing next year.

Does the disease have any impact on your singing voice?
No. There is another part to the disease that can affect swallowing, but it’s only 50 percent of the people that have it. I don’t have it, thank goodness. I’ve been lucky. And that wouldn’t affect my singing voice either. That’s all good.

What sort of treatment are you getting for it?
There’s no specific treatment for IBM. They have traditional medicine that is working. They are coming out with some drug trials. I’m hoping to be involved with those. That is something that is in the future. Right now, the only thing that works for me is exercise. I work out like a maniac all the time. It’s strengthening the muscle that I have. It seems to be the best possible thing for IBM is to work out every day.

Tell me about these two new albums you’re working on.
I can’t! [Laughs] There’s actually three projects. There’s a double album, but I can’t tell you what it’s about since that would spoil the surprise. We’re working on sorting out the release. Hopefully that will come out in June when the tour starts. There’s that and another single album that we’re finishing off tracking next week and then after, if I can muster it, we’re going to do yet another project. They’re all different. As I say, I can’t really say what they are since it’s not time.

How are you doing emotionally in the light of all this?
Obviously it’s not the best thing to wake up to every morning, but I’m a very positive person. I always have been. I’m a resilient person too. If you look at my career, you’d go, “Yes, this guy is pretty resilient.” You can’t really knock me down too far before I brush myself off, pick myself up and move on. Maybe a huge door is closing in my life, but then there’s lots of other doors that open. The first thing we’ve already started with Johns Hopkins is the Peter Frampton Myositis Research Fund. One dollar from every ticket on the tour is going to go straight to Johns Hopkins, that fund. I’m going to obviously do some work with John Hopkins. It’s a very boutique – I hate to use that word, but it is – disease. Only 24,000 people in this country know they have it. But I’m sure there’s a lot more that just think they are getting old like I did.

When you think about raising money for a drug company to do all these trials, that’s why it has taken time. There’s not a lot of return there, so I understand the situation. That’s another reason why now is a good time to announce this so we can start raising some awareness for it.

Might you play Frampton Comes Alive! straight through at some point on the tour?
I don’t think so. I think it will be all-encompassing of what we do in the final setlist that we put together. It’ll probably change along the way. I did that for nearly two years, which was highly successful, but I’ve done that. This will be something different.

Do you think in hindsight that album became so successful that it was almost damaging to your career?
[Laughs] Damaging? Damaging squared! It’s a phenomenon that if something gets so big, for whatever reason, and it is worldwide, it becomes in your face until you get to the point where you can’t stand to listen to it anymore. [Laughs] I truly believe we got to that point. And hey, I was dying to hear myself on the radio and then it got to the point where I thought, “I wish they wouldn’t play me so much.” And then instead of the guitar, it’s the face on the cover of everything. The combination of how big it was and the way I looked, that gave it the “squared.” If I hadn’t been so damn good looking…[laughs]…I wouldn’t have been on the cover of all the magazines, but I would have retained my credibility.

But my credibility has always been there amongst those who know. That’s the beauty of my career as far as I’m concerned. Thanks to David Bowie, myself and a few other people and a Grammy for my instrumental album, my career got turned around. I’ve had a very long, successful career since the beginning of the 2000s when things really started turning around again. I’ve even seen people putting the public down for putting me down in the Seventies. I’ve seen people, at this point, still coming to my defense. I’m taking partial blame for the satin pants, okay? I take responsibility for the satin pants. That’s it! [laughs]

And for being shirtless on the album cover?
Well, they pushed…let’s not go there. [laughs]

I like I’m In You.
Thanks. It could have been a lot better had I been in a better mental state at that point, but my head exploded just before we went in the studio there. It was a vast change in lifestyle or affect on my lifestyle.

What did you learn by playing guitar on the Bowie tour in 1987?
This was a dream that I had ever since we went to school together. We got to know each other and played guitar together at school. And then he went and did his career and I did my career. When Humble Pie had their first package tour in Europe, David was our special guest. That was great to see him again on that. He’d just released “Space Oddity” as that tour happened. He went straight to Number One and Humble Pie were at Number Three or Number Four or whatever it was. It was a great tour, but it was just David and a twelve-string. No makeup. No nothing. And he killed.

The next thing is that he becomes huge and my live album happens. He saw exactly what was happening to me as far as where the image had got misconstrued, let’s put it that way, and knew me as a guitar player. So when he invited me to play guitar on Never Let Me Down and then the Glass Spider tour, he had an agenda for me. He’s always been there on the other end of the phone to talk about stuff, kind of like an older brother. That was the best thing that could have happened to me at that particular moment. He saw what had happened and phoned me up and said, “Hey, do this. Will you come on the road with me?” It was the most fantastic thing.

I’ve been on the same stage, but not at the same time, as David so many times in an evening. Now we’re actually going to be onstage together. It was the biggest thrill of my life. What could be bigger? I remember seeing David playing in a local band before I even went to the school since my dad was David’s art teacher. I remember seeing this band play on the school steps and this thing with hair sticking straight up and playing the saxophone doing Elvis Presley songs. I looked at my dad and said, “Dad, who is that?” He said, “Oh, that’s Jones.” I said, “I want to be him.” I was 11 at the time. That was how it started, so you can imagine what a huge thrill it was to eventually be brought on stage and playing with David. There is nothing better.

To play “Heroes” right by the Berlin Wall must have been unreal.
Yeah. And then my part of the piece where I got to display a really lovely solo was “Loving The Alien.” That was so phenomenal. The whole tour was, for me, kind of circus-like since there were so many people, but the effect was phenomenal. He took it to the limit for that tour. I was very glad to be on it.

To wrap on your farewell tour, how do you think it will feel when you step offstage at the end of the last show?
I’ve thought about that, but I know that all my kids will be there. My ex-wives will be there. [Laughs] I hope not. No, they probably will. It’s going to be a party and a celebration of what’s going to come. We’re going to celebrate. We’re not going to look backwards. We’re going to go forward. I know I’ve got so much more to do. It will be an emotional evening, obviously. I have such a great support group. My kids. My ex-wives. [Laughs] I’m very lucky.

And you’re a fighter. You fought through the Eighties. You fought through the Sgt. Pepper movie. You fought though everything and you can fight through this too.
Thank you! You said that! I didn’t say that! Well, I echo your feelings.
