Hate Your Job? Here’s How to Fix It

When we’re in a terrible job we think we’re the only person who is in a terrible job, and everyone else loves their job, and everyone’s life is great, and our life is terrible. But, in fact, every single person, no matter where they are in their life now, has had a job that they hated.

The only people who don’t have jobs they hate are people who don’t take any risks and end up having terrible careers, because part of a good career path is having moved through a job that you hate.

Here are three steps to make a horrible job good.

1. Befriend the best-networked person in the company.

The problem with a really terrible job is that it doesn’t have the three things that are most important in a job, which are engaging work, manageable goals, and control over your results. So what you need to do is create your own engaging work with manageable goals. So do that by deciding that you’re going to be friends with the person who is most able to help you get this job. Look around the company and decide who’s got the most potential.

The worse the company is, the quicker it will be to find this person, because people with huge potential don’t stay at terrible companies, so odds are, there’s only one to find. Find your one person, and then each day do one thing to get closer to that person.

There is a wide range of steps you can take that, usually in the how‑to‑get‑a‑mentorcategory. Even if you don’t want this person as a mentor, the best way to get someone to pay attention to you is to let him know that you admire him and want help from him. So act like you want a mentor and your job will suddenly become meaningful because you might actually get a mentor.

2. Look for the most terribly managed areas of the company and fix them.

A tell‑tale sign of a horrible job is that it’s a horrible company, and a tell‑tale sign of a horrible company is that almost every single thing is managed terribly. Usually what has happened when things are so terrible is that someone ruined a project and then dumped it.

So in the terrible company there are dumped projects everywhere. You should pick one up and start fixing it. Even if you can only fix it a tiny little bit, on your resume it’s going to look really good. It will say increased efficiency 20 percent, increased revenue 21 percent, decreased staffing costs 30 percent, because it’s really easy to have this type of achievement when you’re dealing with complete stupidity at the onset.

3. Start rewriting your resume.

At a horrible company there’s no accountability, and when there’s no accountability you can do nothing all day, and that really opens up your schedule. The first thing you should do with your open schedule is to start job hunting, but do it in a systematic way.

Go find the job that you want and make lists of all the bullets they say that they want from somebody who’s qualified. Move all of those bullets onto your resume and say to yourself, “How can I make these bullets true on my resume?” So each day is a game to try to make one of those bullets true by doing things that nobody cares

Handling Rejection At Work

It can be crushing and infuriating to be denied a raise or passed over for a promotion you know you deserve. But let’s face it, business is business, and it doesn’t take your personal needs and emotions into account. So although you will of course have a strong reaction whenever things don’t go your way at work, your response needs to be professional and handled with tact. Here’s how to deal with professional letdown in your job.

What Not To Do

Don’t get emotional, pouty, or openly upset. Be professional; you should not start badmouthing your boss to your coworkers or explaining to colleagues why the person who got the promotion over you is less qualified. Stem the outrage and indignation, and focus instead on the reasons for having been passed over. There are reasons, and your employers have a justification for having refused you. So don’t send out a passive aggressive email or call your boss to ask why you were turned down. In fact, keep that question why not? entirely to yourself.

What To Do

The first thing to do is to schedule a sit down meeting with your supervisor. This is business, professionalism requires being straightforward and direct. Rather than asking why not, explain openly that you had expected to receive the advancement, and ask what you need to change to insure that you aren’t passed over next time such an opportunity arises. Show that you are invested in long-term growth with the company and that you aren’t satisfied with career stagnation.

Depending on what you learn from your boss, this is also probably a good time to have a chat with a headhunter. They can be a great resource to help assess your position in the industry, and can give an honest answer as to what others in the field are earning and how quickly they typically advance. You might find out your expectations were unrealistic, or you could find out its time to jump ship.

Most of all, it is essential to remain as dispassionate as possible when evaluating your next step. Don’t dwell on the disappointment. Rather, use it as an opportunity for self-assessment and growth. Have you reached the limit of your advancement at the company? Are you not doing enough to promote the interests of the business? If there are better career options out there, the rejection may be a sign that it is time to move on; find a company where your upward mobility will be less hindered. If not, perhaps you aren’t working hard enough or directing your efforts in the most efficient direction. In either case, an unexpected rejection at work is probably a signal something needs to change.

Make Your New Job A Stepping Stone To Your Ideal Career

Whether you are just out of college or been working in your current job for 20 years, the fact of the matter is that every person has a dream job. The career that always seems just out of reach but is the one position that you believe you would be happy to work at for the rest of your life.

The problem though, as I just mentioned, is that this ‘dream job’ always seems unattainable – but it doesn’t have to be that way.

1. Get On The Right Ladder

If you are serious about eventually getting your dream job then it is important that you make the right first move. There is no point working 10-20 years in a completely different corporate ladder because it will get you no closer to your dream job. Finding work anywhere in the ladder below your dream job is the best first step your can make because it puts you in a direct line towards your goal.

2. Have A Strong Work Ethic

Before you go around sprouting that you want to work your way to the top you need to have the track record to prove that you have what it takes. Work hard and be great at your current job before you try and push for a promotion.

3. Let Management Know Your Intentions

Employers like hard workers but they are more than happy to keep people in their current jobs unless they have a reason otherwise. If you are not yet at your dream job then be sure to let your manager know that you are willing to take new opportunities and responsibilities.

4. Take Opportunities

And when these opportunities do arise, sometimes they can come at inopportune times, if you are committed to reaching your goal then you need to know that opportunities usually come when you least expect it – so be aware of new options.

5. Be Patient

Climbing the corporate ladder can be a long process, so don’t expect to land your dream job in your first year. Be patient, work hard and slowly climb that ladder until you find yourself in the position you have worked towards.
